The Ethiopian Tigray Churches

You wouldn’t typically think of Ethiopia as a go-to spiritual spot on the planet. Apparently Abuna Yemata Guh with its 17th-century frescoes, is referred to by some people as the world’s least accessible place of worship. The three Tigray Churches are special and sacred although clearly not easy to get to: Abuna Yemata Guh, Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor.

You start out in Axum, an Ethiopian city and if you plan it right, you can end in a place called Mekele. You can get guides from either. It is said that although there are more than 120 churches in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, most explore the three main ones mentioned above.

The primary religion is Tigray, which is apparently a sect of Coptic Christianity under the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. You’ll see remnants of this in their culture and art inside the churches and beyond. At times, it feels like Eastern Europe in style.
